Informed Consent Policy for Counseling

At the Maryland Center for Mediation, Counseling, and Coaching, LLC, we prioritize transparency and collaboration to ensure the best outcomes for our clients. This Informed Consent Policy outlines the rights, responsibilities, and expectations for both clients and counselors.
1. Nature and Scope of Counseling
- Counseling is a professional service that involves the exploration of emotional, mental, and behavioral challenges with the goal of promoting personal growth and well-being.
- Counseling may include individual, family, or group sessions, based on the client’s needs and goals.
- Clients are encouraged to actively participate in sessions and communicate openly about their concerns and expectations.
- Clients will be provided referrals to licensed Counselors, we do not provide Counseling services; only coaching.
2. Confidentiality
- All information shared during counseling sessions is confidential and will not be disclosed without the client’s written consent, except in the following situations:
- When required by law (e.g., court orders, mandatory reporting of abuse or threats of harm).
- When there is an immediate threat to the safety of the client or others.
- When consultation with other professionals is necessary, but only with the client’s consent and without identifying information.
3. Potential Risks and Benefits
- Coaching services can lead to positive changes, such as improved coping skills, emotional insight, and better relationships. However, discussing difficult topics may temporarily evoke strong emotions or discomfort. If this occurs during a coaching session, speak with your coach and you will be provided a list of counselors.
- There are no guaranteed outcomes in coaching, as progress depends on the individual’s active participation and external factors.
4. Client Rights
- Clients have the right to:
- Be treated with respect and dignity.
- Ask questions about the coaching process.
5. Counselor Responsibilities
- The coach will:
- Provide services within their scope of training.
- Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical standards.
- Refer clients to other professional counselors’ expertise.
6. Fees and Cancellation Policy
- Fees for coaching services will be discussed and agreed upon before the first session. Payment is required at the time of service unless otherwise arranged.
- Cancellations or rescheduling must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Missed appointments or late cancellations may incur a fee.
7. Consent
By engaging in services, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms outlined above. You consent to participate in coaching services with the understanding of its scope, risks, and benefits.
